The Hellebore Shop is open from late March and closes in September or October (depending on when we sell out).

Helleborus x hybridus Selections
These are the most adaptable and easiest to grow of all Hellebores. Tough, drought tolerant once established and very long lived. Helleborus x hybridus is the botanically correct name for what used to be called ‘Helleborus orientalis’. Our varieties are just as tough as the old fashioned ones that would have been found in your Grandmother’s garden, but with better flowers. If you have never grown a Hellebore, start with a few of these.
The Helleborus x hybridus selections listed in this section can vary a little in stature but typically reach about 45cm tall when in flower. When mature they will have a spread of around 60cm. Their foliage is evergreen and the main flowering period is from July to September, depending on climate and season. We suggest planting them 45 to 50cm apart.

Caulescent species and hybrids
These are some of the most distinctive and effective of Hellebores. The caulescent (stemmed) Hellebores have a taller growing, more shrub-like habit and are quite different in appearance to other Hellebores.
Their height and dramatic foliage can add valuable structure to the garden over the winter months. Their flowers, while individually small, are produced in a large terminal inflorescence which can also make quite an impact. All good tough plants, but they must have good drainage. Need to build up soil depth if planting into clay.
Helleborus niger and its hybrids
This distinct species and its hybrids are some of the choicest plants of the genus. Characteristically large and outward facing flowers make H. niger a stunning species.
H. niger needs your coolest spot with good deep soil with plenty of organic matter. If you are in a hotter climate and require a white flowered Hellebore, I would recommend the white flowered form of Helleborus x hybridus.
