29th July 2015 by peter

See below for our top 5 tips for keeping your Hellebores at their best this Winter.

Nursery Open Days

Post Office Farm Nursery is open (from 10am to 4pm) every Sunday until the end of September.  We are now coming into the peak flowering period and the Hellebores are looking great now.  Lots of stunning flowering plants as well as smaller seedlings available for sale.  Hellebore talk and tours of the Nursery every open day at 11am and 2pm.

Click here for more information about our Nursery Open Days.

Mail Order Hellebores

We have most of our 2015 varieties still available to mail order to all states (except WA).  Now is the ideal time to get Hellebores planted in your garden.

Top 5 Winter maintenance tips for your Hellebores:

i) if you have not done so already it is a good idea to remove some/all old foliage from older plants to open up the base of the plant to air and light.  Cut it right down to the base.  Remove any mouldy/rotten stems also.

ii) Clear mulch/debris from around the base of the plant as this will help prevent possible fungal disease during wet weather.

iii) If you did not apply a controlled release fertiliser in Autumn then consider applying some complete fertiliser to Hellebores or giving them a liquid feed.

iv) If you have lots of Hellebore seedlings emerging around your Hellebores, consider removing or thinning them out to prevent things getting too crowded.

v) Assess the position of your Hellebores.  Are they getting enough light during Winter?  How is their drainage?  Will they get enough shade in Summer?  If you need to move established Hellebores do so in the next few weeks.

There is even more information about growing Hellebores on our website.
